Artist's Description

A McDonnel Douglas F-4E Phantom II based at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico takes to the air for a flight demonstration during the 2004 Reno National Championship Air Racer at Stead Field in Nevada. Over 5000 of the twin engine, tandem seat, mach 2 fighters were originally built starting in 1961 for the United States Navy and Air Force. The aircraft was also exported to Australia, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Iran, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The United States retired its last Phantom in 1996 and export countries are the only operators of the aircraft type. Though the aircraft pictured is in U.S. markings it is actually a German aircraft flown by German Air Force pilots for training.

I eventually progressed to a Kodak 110 Instamatic, that I earned by selling newspaper subscriptions, and then in 1977 my parents gave me an Olympus OM-1 SLR for Christmas. The OM-1 opened up a whole new world for me. It was a real camera and felt solid in my hands, but it was also a completely manual camera. No autofocus. No autoexposure. It forced me to learn the relationship between shutter speeds and f-stops, how to control...
